Architecture of Health: The Annual Zeidler-Evans Lecture

Established in 2022 by the family and friends of Dr. John R. Evans, the first Dean of medicine at McMaster University, to honour the renowned architect Eberhard Zeidler, who collaborated with Evans between 1967 and 1972 to create and build the McMaster Health Sciences Centre. The design for a 1.76 million square-foot building, combining both a tertiary hospital and university facility to teach health care professionals, would transform how hospitals are created, built and used.

Architecture of Health: The Annual Zeidler-Evans Lecture is an annual public lecture at McMaster University given by a researcher with expertise and interest in the connections between architecture, physical space and health. The lecture will address innovative approaches to health education, research, and/or care through the design, use and analysis of physical space, with a particular focus on social determinants of health and their connection to space.

The inaugural lecture was given on September 12, 2022, by professor Annmarie Adams of McGill University. Adams is jointly appointed in the School of Architecture and the Department of Social Studies of Medicine. She holds the Stevenson Chair in the History and Philosophy of Science, including Medicine. Adams’ research focuses on the architectural history of medicine.
